The cloud: 5 myths and realities every business should know
We clear up the most common cloud myths —cost, security, control— and what they actually mean for your business operations.
“The cloud” gets said a lot, but understood little. These are the most common myths I hear from clients.
1. “Everything in the cloud is automatically secure”
False. The cloud is secure if you configure it well. The provider protects the infrastructure; you’re responsible for access, permissions, and backups.
2. “The cloud is always cheaper”
It depends. You pay for usage and eliminate idle servers, but a bad configuration can cost more than your own server. You have to monitor consumption.
3. “If it’s in the cloud, I won’t lose my data”
Not necessarily. A service can go down and, without your own backups, you can lose information. The golden rule: always keep copies.
4. “Migrating to the cloud is just moving what I already have”
Migration is a chance to redesign processes, not just relocate the same problems. Moving an inefficient architecture to the cloud is still inefficient.
5. “The cloud is for big companies”
The opposite: the pay-per-use model makes it ideal for small businesses, which get access to technology only large companies could once afford.
The cloud isn’t a magic solution or an end in itself. It’s a way to consume technology that, well understood, gives any business flexibility and scale.
